Our partners at Smartsheet just passed their one year anniversary of launching an integration with VMware Zimbra. And looking back, we’ve seen a strong increase in Zimbra users embracing the online project management and collaboration app. In fact, Smartsheet continues to be a favorite, now ranking as a “Top 5 Most Popular App” in the Zimbra Zimlet Gallery. Smartsheet now claims more than 100 joint customers with Zimbra!

For Zimbra users, Smartsheet serves as the perfect union between spreadsheets, project tools and file sharing. While most work projects take shape as a spreadsheet, they break down when you need to get others involved. There’s no way to easily track versions, much less associate notes, share files, set reminders and so forth. Smartsheet allows Zimbra users to keep the spreadsheet layout you like (and already know how to use) and gain the additional automation you need.

For Smartsheet, the momentum is exciting because Zimbra customers typically represent larger enterprise deployments and provide a higher average contribution to the bottom line. That’s smart business.

Why the uptick in momentum?
In addition to solving a real business need, here are a few other reasons that contribute to the popularity of the combined solution:

Extends the functionality of both apps. The apps are a natural fit. You can show key project dates in Zimbra or overlay a Zimbra calendar directly to a project calendar in Smartsheet. In one click, you can import Zimbra contacts into Smartsheet for easy collaborating and sharing sheets. You can also attach documents from Zimbra briefcase to any row. The apps make each other more useful, valuable.

Convenient access. With Smartsheet available as a tab within Zimbra, access is seamless and easy. No more having to navigate to a separate web application.

Scales for enterprise. The combination of Smartsheet’s cloud app being “always available” with the viral nature of “sharing sheets” causes adoption to spread organically across the organization. And because it’s so flexible to set up and use, we’re seeing teams from project management to marketing, operations, HR processes, and sales pipelines, all embrace the tool. After all, everyone has work to manage.

Provides admin controls and security safeguards required by larger organizations. Most simple web apps don’t offer provisioning controls at a centralized level. Smartsheet is “enterprise ready”, providing group tools for onboarding and monitoring users, transferring ownership of content and managing data access. Providing the ability to self-manage the deployment and ongoing maintenance of accounts and content is definitely one of the must-haves for apps to succeed in larger settings.

Thank you Zimbra community. While Smartsheet’s momentum encourages us, we understand we’ve just scratched the surface. We’re committed to working closely with Smartsheet — and all of our integration partners — to create more value for VMware Zimbra customers.

Yahoo Mail

Yahoo doesn’t want you to back up your mail. How do I know this? Yahoo disables POP3 access to its free users–in order to use the POP3 feature, you must be a Yahoo Mail Plus member, which costs $20 a year. Unless you’re a Yahoo Mail Plus member, utilities such as MailStore Home won’t work.

If you’re cheap (as I am), here’s how to back up your Yahoo Mail without dropping that $20.

1. Download and install Zimbra Desktop, which is a free desktop mail client that works with Yahoo Mail, Gmail, and Hotmail.

2. Open Zimbra Desktop and click Add New Account. Select Yahoo from the drop-down menu and fill in the form (e-mail address, password, and so on). You can also choose to synchronize calendars, contacts, and groups.

3. Click Validate and Save and wait for Zimbra to synchronize–this may take a long time, and you won’t have access to your account while Zimbra is synchronizing. Once Zimbra is synced up with your Yahoo Mail, click Launch Desktop and go to the Preferences tab. In the left menu, underneath your Yahoo account, click Import/Export.

4. Under ‘Export’, make sure Account is checked, and then check the Advanced Settings box. If you don’t want to sync everything, uncheck all of the boxes except for Mail and then click Export.

5. You’ll get a zipped file (.TGZ), which you can open with WinRAR. All of your messages save in .EML files, which you can open with a desktop e-mail program (such as Outlook or Thunderbird). You can also import this zipped file into Zimbra Desktop, and your messages will be recovered; once your messages are restored to Zimbra Desktop, the utility will sync with the server, and your Yahoo Mail account will be back on its feet.

Zimbra isn’t as easy to use as Gmail Backup or MailStore Home are, but it is an effective way to back up your Yahoo Mail–for free. Zimbra Desktop retains folders and attachments, and can even “back up” your contacts and calendar.

Now that you have a backup of your cloud-based e-mail account on your hard drive, you’ll be prepared the next time Gmail falls victim to a bug–as long as you remember to back up your hard drive, of course.

Just another ordinary day browsing my email, while my facebook and so many other browsers are open in other tabs. What I usually do is go back and fourth between facebook and other websites while waiting for my email to open not knowing that I am already a victim of email virus and spam. So, five minutes passed and I return to my opened email and the content is gibberish language. OH NO! my heart is pounding! I hurriedly deleted the email.

But the Damage has been done!

What do I do now?

My files…. Important documents, trying to remember if I saved my files in my external hard disk or flash drive. I remember a friend telling me that once a virus is on your computer, the type of virus or the method that was used to get there is not as important as removing it and preventing further infection.

Is there a software that removes infection?

How I wish I bought one.

I remembered I saved my old files but due to my busy schedule I haven’t saved my new files yet. And these are the most important files. The most valuable files are the new files we have just created. Like Brochures for our new products and services. Price lists for our sales people – such a waste of time to make and redo again, Price lists from our suppliers that I haven’t memorized, I’m thinking its so embarrassing to ask for the list again. Not to mention all the pictures we took from our latest vacation trip to Boracay Island, the trip with my kids to Hong Kong Disneyland. The trip I had with my mom to Hawaii. Well it’s a good thing my mom also has camera so I can ask for the pictures but how about my pictures. It just makes me cry. These are memories that we can’t buy.

I stare at at my computer wishing I could turn back the time and not open that spam email. Who could be so cruel. Telling myself how could I be so irresponsible. Our computer is our lifeline. Especially nowadays that this is our window to World communication. With the current recession going on, being thrifty is the key. Now IF ONLY…

IF ONLY we downloaded a high grade anti virus software,

IF ONLY I paid attention to the emails before I open,

WE REALLY CAN’T AFFORD TO HAVE SPAM AND VIRUSES IN OUR COMPUTER…
